Drugs

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens are a group of drugs which can change a person's perception, making them see or hear things that don't exist. They can also produce changes in thought, sense of time and mood.

Hallucinogens occur naturally but can also be manufactured, for example LSD or ecstasy. In NSW it is illegal to possess, use or supply any hallucinogen. Penalties range from a $2000 fine to imprisonment.

Health effects

The effect of hallucinogens depends on the amount taken, the person's experience with the drug, mood and the way the drug is taken. The effect also depends on the quality of the drug. Hallucinogens vary in quality which makes them dangerous to use.

Effects of hallucinogens (called tripping) include:

  • feelings of anxiety
  • fear of losing control
  • a sense of time passing
  • inability to concentrate
  • feelings of separation
  • distorted perceptions
  • halluninatory experiences
  • risk taking behaviours.

One risk with using hallucinogens is that the user may experience unpredictable 'flashbacks' - where the effects of the drug are relived without them actually taking it. Some naturally occurring hallucinogens are also poisonous.

Social effects

The user can often be in states of delusion making it difficult to separate hallucinations from reality. Death or accidents can also occur as a result of 'tripping' in unsafe environments. The use of these drugs can also cause emotional problems such as a relationship or family problems.

Helping friends

If you or a friend needs help with a drug like hallucinogens you can contact a local service or use one of many of the phonelines.

Hooked

Like other drugs if used over time a tolerance may be built up to hallucinogens. Tolerance means that higher amounts need to be taken to get the same effect as before. Some regular users develop a physiological dependence on the drugs. If the drug is unavailable they may panic or become anxious. With assistance dependence can be reduced and stopped. For help visit the alcohol & drug unit within your local health service. Old habits can be changed.
