Needle Syringe Program

If you inject drugs it is important that you use your own injecting equipment and not share needles, syringes, tourniquets, spoons, water or filters with other people. Using your own equipment and not sharing will reduce your risk of hepatitis C and HIV transmission. Most community health centres and hospitals in NSW provide a needle syringe program service. For information regarding the location of Needle Syringe Programs in your area you can contact the Alcohol and Drug Information Service on 1800 422 599 (freecall).

Used injecting equipment should be disposed of appropriately in a sharps container and returned to the Needle Syringe Program, hospital or community health centre in your area. Local councils may also provide sharps disposal facilities. Call your local council to enquire about the availability of sharps disposal facilities.

If you find needles inappropriately discarded in a public place you can ring the Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353. Arrangements will then be made for their disposal.
