Around Australia there is countless public health services available for you to use. In most cases they are provided free by the government under the Medicare scheme. These include hospitals and community health centres.

Public hospitals are located in most larger towns and cities around Australia. When you visit a public hospital for an emergency or for planned treatment it is usually charged to through Medicare and you aren't charged at all. The services offered by hospitals will depend on their size and location. Sometimes, because these services are available to everyone, you might have to wait for a bed in hospital - but this is unavoidable, so some patience might be required. To help avoid delays only present to the emergency department in an emergency.

Community Health Centres are also located in most larger towns. Community health services are also government subsidised and offer priority services to people who most need them - people on health care cards, the elderly and Aboriginal communities. Community health centres provide lots of services like counselling, community nursing, sexual health and other preventive services.

While we don't often think about it, Ambulance services aren't free in lots of cases. It could be a good idea to investigate Ambulance insurance in your area.
